The advantage metal working affords over woodworking, is the better half almost never approaches with “can you make this” requests.
Shop Sanctity, Sanity and Domestic Bliss are maintained.
Alas I had to go and get a couple of woodworking machines. You know, just to handle the most basic tasks.
Like a pair of coat racks for the kitchen
I spot a nice bin of hardwood at work – blocks for packing, sort of stuff steel arrives on.
Wife had requested a pair of coat racks …… hmmmm
I had thought of doing a Homer Simpson spice rack style job to discourage future requests….. but na, I took the high road.
Wood gets jointed then planed on the little Inca. I wish the tables were longer, but with a helical insert cutter and 5hp motor its a little workhorse!
Then they are ripped in half on the Inca bandsaw

To make it interesting I set up a router table and made various mouldings

the moulding is wrapped around the ends
getting ready for stainling
A little clean up with a block plane
Colouring is via aniline dye. I tried to get something similar to the kitchen cabinets
At first used varnish but didn’t the gloss.
There is a lot BS out there about finishes! I ended up using a matte polyurethane….. where the BS comes into it is these calling a plastic polyurethane “varnish”
Varnish is a resin, solvent and an oil. By definition a plastic polyurethane is NOT varnish ….. but facts never stopped a marketing dept lol
Coming along, but still some flaws to sand out. I don’t sanding wood – proper wood working should be planed and scraped, but it’s a coat rack so succumbed to the convenience of sanding

a little 3D printed guide made spacing and alignment of hook mounting holes easy. I chose a brushed nickel as it matches the kitchen hardware.
The two matching racks look good on either side of the pantry ….. and wife is a happy camper!
