Setting up for Resin Printing

Messy, Smelly Nasty Suff

Resin Stinks, is messy and stick stuff and hurts skin and presumably lungs.  It can be very easy and painless to deal with while maintaining domestic bliss, with the right equipment and process.

There is a chap named Michael who goes by the Youtube name “Nerdtronic” who  has a good video on setting things up.  He’s thought it through well and his video got me started

The Bench

Just a 4′ x 18″ wire shelf cut to the right height.

Its on casters for two reasons.  I have some woodworking machines in the this room, so can roll the whole resin printing setup out to keep it sawdust free.  Secondly, if I have something else I want to do under the hood (painting?  silver soldering? electrolysis?  plating?  other?) it would easy to swap out this bench with another.

Think like a Vet

My youngest son is a veterinarian.  I can remember in his early school days him describing ‘practicals’ or testing of some as simple as giving shot generating an automatic failure if one deviated even slightly from the scripted step by step process.  The script prevented contamination and maintained cleanliness.

Resin printing is reminiscent in that if you follow a procedure with everything needed at hand, the mess will spread to everything.

Stand for draining 3d resin, holder is 3d printed and stand is a repurposed lab stand

Draining Stand

To drain the resin back into its bottle, I 3D filament printed a piece the resin tray can sit in.  Underneath is a paint filter, and below that the resin bottle.

Its really important to filter the resin being return to the bottle.   If you don’t, its always possible that a broken bit or of some semi-cured resin ends up back in the bottle which will cause havoc in a later print when its caught between the tray and the platform.
