Small Lathe Tool Post Ideas

Over the years I’ve seen lots of different styles of tool posts for small lathes. Some of the designs are quite clever and I’ve found the variety interesting. There is also a problem with many in that put the delicate T slot they mount in precarious position – tightening them puts a shearing force on the T slot!

Stark

Rivett

Rivett uses a clever design on their watchmakers tool posts as well as the larger, in venerable 608 lathes.  Its does however require round tool bits, which will available, might not be as prevelant in everyone’s tool box

The tool holder is a round bar that gets clamped in a split holder.  The tool bit is held in a round hole eccentric to the holder so height is readily set by rotating the bar.  The bar itself is slit like a collet such that when the holder clamps the bar, it also clamps down on the round tool bit
